If you’re interested in starting your own trucking business, you must follow some basic rules and guidelines. Some of these steps are general to starting any business, but some are much more specific to how to start a trucking business. The first generic step is writing a business plan. Make sure you outline the exact parameters of your business. Then you need to resolve the issue of money. Will you be using money out of pocket? Will you be securing a loan? Whatever the case, money must be settled and dealt with.
Specific to trucking, you’ll have to obtain all the necessary permits and licenses. There are many, but a few examples include your IRP tags, MC numbers, IFTA decals, and more. You’ll also want to get insurance that accommodates a trucking business. Once all these are in place, you’ll have to start networking and drumming up business. And if you find some success, the last step will be to expand into hiring additional drivers. Make sure you’re extremely selective with your hiring process. No additional drivers is better than bad additional drivers.
